~ Eleventh Century Clothing ~ In the eleventh century the bag sleeves came up, the surcote (outer garment) became shorter, so that one could see the undergarment. The "11th century" dress type (GF3) designates
a shorter surcote with wide tapering sleeves.
In this example the outer garment (made of linen) is decorated
with silk brocade and a brocade girdle (G5). The sleeves
of the outer dress were fitted with lining. |
